美国大部分大学接受通用申请表（Common
Application）和 CAAS 的申请系统 也就是可以通过Common
Application 和 CAAS 网站申请大学。 但也有一些学校采用自己的申请表格，比如加州州立大学系统。名气大的还有MIT 和 George Town等等。
使用通用或CAAS的申请表, 大学需要基本信息只要填一次可以送到不同的大学，为学生省了大量的工作量。很多采用通用申请表的大学，除了要求通用申请表的信息之外，还要一些附加信息，也就是常说的Supplement。通用申请网站过去几年都是在8月1日左右开放下一年度的申请。
通用申请表要求学生写篇Personal
Essay（短文），有时也被称为Personal Statement。 短文要求在250到650字之间（这要求常有变动）。一般在500字比较适中。例如，短文可以在下面七个选择中自选一个 （2017-2018年度）。
Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story. The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience? Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome? Describe a problem you've solved or a problem you'd like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma—anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution. Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others. Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more? Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you've already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design.
很多大学在附加材料里还要本校指定的短文和一些其它问题。
通用申请时间流程：
· 8月1日以后(Junior)在通用申请表（Common Application）开始申请（免费）
· 8月-10月填表，写短文，报推荐信老师
· 10月检查ED/EA（提前申请）学校的材料，建议打出全部表格认真检查
· 10月底 前发出ED/EA申请（大部分学校的提前申请截止日期是10月31日 ， 不同学校收费不一样）。同时报送官方的SAT，
ACT成绩
· 10-11月发出ED/EA申请后， 常常查看 Common Application 户头，看看老师推荐信到没到位。大部分学校收到申请后会通知学生，并为申请学生提供户头查看进展。要登陆申请大学提供的户头。查看各类材料（高中材料，推荐信，SAT成绩等）是否到位。如是申请私立学校要在 各大学规定日期内填报CSS Profile
· 10月-12月 准备ED/EA面试，同时陆续发出RD（正常申请）；有很多州立学校采用Rolling Admission（先到先批准的方式），申请ED/EA后还可以同时发一些Rolling
Admission的申请。 法理上不冲突。
· 12月31日之前发出所有大学的申请。大部分学校的Regular
Admission（RD）的截止日期是12月31日。 申请发出后要常查大学提供的户头，确定各类材料及时到位。ED/EA的结果大部分在12月中旬出炉
· 10月1日后填报FAFSA
· 正常申请的结果大部分在4月中旬出炉（每年有点不同）
注：
1.也有一些学校一直到2月还接受申请，请详查学校的网站
2. 加州大学没有ED/EA，所有申请的截止日期是11月底
3. 这只是一些常见的情况，具体学校以学校官方公布的信息为准
